Deputy Craig Dodge, EOW March 14, 1987. In the early morning hours of March 14, 1987, Deputy Dodge was dispatched to a domestic assault at an apartment in Hickman, Nebraska. Deputy Dodge arrived within minutes, and knowing his backup was still some distance away, placed the welfare of the victim and her children above his own and tried to intervene. The suspect opened the apartment door while holding the victim in front of him and a concealed handgun at her back. The men conversed for several minutes while Deputy Dodge tried to stall for time as he waited for backup. Suddenly, the suspect raised the gun and shot Deputy Dodge. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended a short time later. Deputy Dodge succumbed to his wounds, and the suspect was sentenced to life in prison.
